Feeding family pets

Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry at a Glance

Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives.
The Pantry provides emergency pet food to help owners continue caring for their family pets despite economic hardship.
We open our doors the 2nd and 4th Saturday each month from, 10am - 12pm, to qualified applicants.
In addition, the Pet Food Pantry works together with senior organizations & facilities such as Meals On Wheels and Plaza Towers. By partnering with these community organizations, we’re able to help low income homebound seniors keep their pet fed, and by their side.
Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry is our area’s first dedicated charitable pet food resource organization.

What We Do

Making A Difference

We started in April of 2009, donating pet food to folks who were receiving food from a local church and soup kitchen in Oildale. Quickly we saw a need far broader in this town than imagined.  Bakersfield has a high unemployment rate along with overcrowded animal shelters.  Many community members don’t have enough money to feed their beloved four-legged  companions.  They often have to make a choice between feeding themselves or their pet.

To date, over 700,000 pounds of pet food has come through our pantry to be given to those in need.  Hardship continues for many in our community and the need seems to grow each year. We need your help more than ever!

We get calls everyday from desperate pet owners asking for help.  Many of our pet food recipients frequent food banks themselves. We are solely dependent on  public support of monetary contributions, pet food, and volunteer work.

Our goal is no family pet goes hungry.

Providing Emergency Pet Food for long term pets.

Reinforcing our Commitment

The Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry provides a resource to help owners continue caring for their family pets despite economic hardship. A record number of dogs and cats are taken to shelters or abandoned because their owners can no longer afford to feed them. The Pantry exists to help preserve the precious bond between humans and their pets.

We provide emergency pet food for long term pets, on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 10am-12pm, at 4500 Shepard, Bakersfield, CA.

All new recipients as well as recipients who are returning to the Pantry for the first time in the calendar year, will complete an application the day they arrive at the Pantry.  PLEASE LIST ALL OF YOUR PETS on the application.  You will be helped the first day and your application will be reviewed to determine if we can continue to assist you.

You CANNOT add or replace a pet for any reason during the time we are helping you.  If you add or replace a pet this is grounds for denial of future assistance.

Ask for your magnet calendar that highlights our distribution days, the next time you are at the Pantry.

When are you open?

We are open the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 10am-12pm.

Do you accept monetary donations?

The Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry receives no funding from any national or state entity.

Please help us with a monetary donation via Paypal, Venmo, or mail to our PO Box, 20801, Bakersfield, CA 93390.
Thank you!

Do you deliver?

We are a small non-profit and do not have the manpower to deliver.

Do you only help Bakersfield?

We serve all of Kern County.  However we are a very small nonprofit and we do not have the manpower to deliver.  It does not seem cost effective to drive from a long distance, but if you will already be in Bakersfield it makes sense to come by.

Do you accept donations?

Donations of dog and cat food (opened bags are fine) can be dropped off at all 3 Self Serve Pet Spa locations, Scruffy to Fluffy Pet Spa, Coffee Road Vet, and Fur and Feathers on Allen Road.  In addtion donations can be dropped off at the Pantry on Saturday mornings.

Can you add pets?

No.  Our cardinal rule is that you cannot add pets while we are assisting recipients with emergency pet food.  If you are struggling to feed what you have it is not reasonable to bring more pets home, for any reason.  That includes year to year.  If you come to us with three pets and we help you, and you need assitance the next year, you should still only have the same three pets.

Do you have a Distribution Day calendar?

We have a large calendar with the distribution days highlighted, that you can take a picture of.

How much of my donation directly supports the cause?

Everything we receive, be it pet food, pet supplies, or monetary donations, all go to assist the public with their pets.

Where are we located?

4500 Shepard, Suite b-1, Bakersfield, CA

What is the minimum age to volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 13.  From ages 13-just under 18, the volunteer must be accompanied by an adult.  Older teens, ages 16-18, may volunteer without an adult on a case by case basis.

Can I apply for pet food online?

Unfortunately, no.  We use a different color paper for the applications each year to assist us with record keeping. So the application must be filled out in person.

Do I need to bring my pet when I get food?

No, that is not required.  We enjoy seeing the dogs we help, but we prefer you do not bring them when it is very hot or very cold.  Cats do not generally walk on leashes so we do not expect to see them at the Pantry.

Are there any benefits for first-time customers?

This is your FAQ Answer. Make sure your writing is clear and concise. It’s a good idea to review what you’ve written and ask yourself the following - if this was my first time visiting the site, would I fully understand this answer? Then revise or expand as necessary. Consider adding a photo or video as a visual tool or for extra impact.

Do you provide wet cat food and/or litter?

Everything we have is donated, so dry, wet, and litter all depend on what we have received. That said we have haven't run out of dry cat food or litter in the last few months. We have run low on canned cat food, but we do have some right now.
